At the beginning of Contact, Carl Sagan talks about alien life in terms of our relationship to ants. We know ants exist, we see them all the time. I’m not sure if ants know we exist though they’ve surely interacted with us, but it’s not really worth our time to figure out how to communicate with ants and make sure they know we exist.
