Hudson River freezes as Manhattan is encased in worst ice for a decade

  • Freezing temperatures in New York have left large stretches of the iconic Hudson River an impenetrable ice
  • Ferry operators on East River have described the winter as the worst they have experienced in 28 years
  • Ice sheets caused the suspension and the shutting down of services between Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn
  • Experts say 2015's record low temperatures have resulted in conditions even colder than during 2014's Polar Vortex
  • The U.S. Coast Guard has nine boats cutting a path through the ice which Is up to 1.5 feet thick in parts
  • 300 vessels travel the Hudson River during the winter months, carrying more than 10 million barrels of petroleum
  • Temperatures on the Hudson have been around 1 or 2 degrees, with a wind chill of minus 20 degrees at times
  • In the 1800s the Hudson would regularly freeze over, but salinity of the water now stops it happening
