Why This Giant Crack Opened Up In Kenya's Rift Valley

Mai Mahiu-Narok road, in a region just west of Nairobi, Kenya, used to be fully intact. Then, after a period of heavy rainfall late last month, a massive crack was exposed. According to the local news outlet, Daily Nation, it measures 50 feet deep and 65 feet wide in some spots. Geologist David Adede, who spoke with the paper, said the crack was likely filled previously with volcanic ash from nearby Mt. Longonot. This means the space was only exposed when rainwater washed the ash away. Reuters reports that the opening formed rapidly. One resident named Eliud Njoroge Mbugua saw...

The Earth Is Humming—Here's What It Means

Our blue planet spins suspended in outer space—and it hums, too. European researchers say the Earth's incessant hum originates from the bottom of the ocean. This study, published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters in November, gleans material from ocean-bottom seismometer stations, contrasting with previous data from vibration tools based on land. "It's like taking a piano and slamming all the keys at the same time," says Spahr Webb of Columbia University's Earth Institute, who was not associated with the study. "Except they're not nice harmonics. They're oddball frequencies." Humming by the Numbers The planet's hum has tickled scientists' minds...

World Will End On 19 November With ‘Earthquake Apocalypse’. We Have Only 1 Week Left

We’ve already seen a lot of predictions this year regarding the end of the world. The latest one was regarding some Planet Nibiru which was supposed to bring the doomsday on Sept 23. That didn’t happen, of course! So maybe crack open your advent calendar early and stick two fingers up at your sadistic Legs, Bums and Tums instructor. The assumption has been put forward by conspiracy theorist, Terral Croft, who pinpoints the exact date as 19 November – at least you’ve got time to attend some fun bonfire night displays… Writing via conspiracy-riddled blog, Planet X, Croft noted: The...

464 earthquakes in one week hit much feared Yellowstone 'supervolcano'

The supervolcano at Yellowstone National Park has been hit with more than 400 earthquakes since June 12. Researchers say it's nothing to be alarmed about, though. In a statement to the Star Valley Independent, scientists from the University of Utah -- which monitors the volcano -- said the earthquake swarms are nothing new. “This is the highest number of earthquakes at Yellowstone within a single week in the past five years, but is fewer than weekly counts during similar earthquakes swarms in 2002, 2004, 2008 and 2010,” scientists explained. The largest quake in the swarm hit was recorded on June...

LA Residents Won't Like New San Andreas Prediction

(NEWSER) – Californians may expect the earth to move, but a new study of the San Andreas Fault suggests that the LA area is overdue for a Big One. The study by the US Geological Survey of a section of the fault in the Grapevine area found that major quakes strike there on average once every 100 years—and the last one hit 160 years ago, per a USGS release. Only two people were killed in the old quake, but a similar one today would surely have a much higher toll, while also damaging aqueducts, the electric grid, and highways. In...
