Antarctica still losing ice despite big rise in snowfall

Snowfall in Antarctica has increased by 10 per cent since 1800, an analysis of ice cores from Antarctica has revealed. An increase in snowfall has long been predicted as a result of global warming. “A warming atmosphere is wetter, producing more precipitation,” says team leader Liz Thomas of the British Antarctic Survey, who presented the findings today at a meeting of the European Geosciences Union in Vienna, Austria. In fact, it used to be thought that increased snowfall in the Antarctica would more than counter any ice loss due to warming. Early IPCC reports forecast that the ice sheets of...

Forget Chemtrails — Scientist Wants to Cover Skies With Table Salt

For those who live and drive in cold climates, road salt is critical for getting around on icy roads. Sure, it may not be good for the waterways or the vegetation it runs off into, but priorities are priorities. That same logic may soon drive researchers to create real chem trails in the sky where the ‘chem’ is NACL – table salt. A radical proposal presented recently at a conference in Texas outlined a way to “geoengineer” the climate to fight global warming by peppering the Earth’s stratosphere with table salt crystals which would reflect sunlight back into space. Circling...

We already have planet-cooling technology, the problem is, it’s killing us.

A trope of sci-fi movies these days, from Snowpiercer to Geostorm, is that our failure to tackle climate change will eventually force us to deploy an arsenal of unproven technologies to save the planet. Think sun-deflecting space mirrors or chemically altered clouds. And because these are sci-fi movies, it’s assumed that these grand experiments in geoengineering will go horribly wrong. The fiction, new evidence suggests, may be much closer to reality than we thought. When most people hear “climate change,” they think of greenhouse gases overheating the planet. But there’s another product of industry changing the climate that has received...

Cleaning Up Air Pollution May Strengthen Global Warming

Pollution in the atmosphere is having an unexpected consequence, scientists say—it's helping to cool the climate, masking some of the global warming that's occurred so far. That means efforts worldwide to clean up the air may cause an increase in warming, as well as other climate effects, as this pollution disappears. New research is helping to quantify just how big that effect might be. A study published this month in the journal Geophysical Research Letters suggests that eliminating the human emission of aerosols—tiny, air-polluting particles often released by industrial activities—could result in additional global warming of anywhere from half a...

See this bizarre Plan B to cool the planet

As efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions fall woefully short and many scientists agree cuts alone will not be enough to avert the consequences of climate change, radical new schemes are being proposed. While “Plan A” remains tackling the problem at its source, these “Plan Bs” includes a raft of so-called geoengineering solutions. One of those is a controversial idea known as stratospheric aerosol injection. The idea basically involves spraying a bunch of aerosols into the stratosphere so the reflective particles block and reflect the sun’s rays, ultimately cooling the planet. This already happens naturally through volcanic eruptions but some...
