Do you know the difference between grass fed, pasture raised, organic and free range?

A new survey finds that animal welfare labels affect buying decisions, but few people actually know what they mean. Since most of us aren't out in the woods or fields bringing home the bacon, so to speak, there is an easy disconnect between, say, a cow in the pasture and a hamburger on the plate. A lambchop wrapped in plastic at a supermarket bears little resemblance to a lamb in the meadow – and it makes it easier for us to not think about how our food was raised. 10 States Report Crop Damage From Illegal Dicamba Use on Monsanto's GMO Seeds

To the horror of farmers across America's farm belt, hundreds of thousands of crop acres have been adversely impacted by the apparent misuse of the drift-prone herbicide dicamba on Monsanto's Roundup Ready Xtend soybean and cotton plants. According to a recent U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) compliance advisory, the EPA and state agencies have received an "unusually high" number of reports of crop damage that appear related to the illegal spraying of dicamba. The EPA has collected similar reports of crop damage from 10 states: Missouri, Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. Missouri appears to...

Obama Signs Anti-GMO Labelling of Food Bill

On July 29, President Obama signed bill S.764 into law, dealing a major blow to the movement to require GMO labeling. The new law, which food safety groups call the "Deny Americans the Right to Know" (DARK) Act, has at least three key parts that undermine Vermont's popular GMO labeling bill and make it nearly impossible for Americans to know what's in their food. The law claims to set a federal labeling standard by requiring food producers to include either a QR barcode that can be scanned with a phone, or a 1-800 number that consumers can call to find...

Monsanto weed killer ingredient is probably causing cancer

Monsanto, the US-based agrochemical giant that has dominated the agricultural industry with its herbicides and genetically modified seeds, is the focus of yet another controversy over the potential hazards of one of its biggest chemicals. Glyphosate, one of the primary ingredients in Monsanto’s ubiquitous weedkiller Roundup and other companies’ products, probably causes non-Hodgkin lymphoma, according to a new report from the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). The report is based on a review of existing evidence, including multiple studies of the effects of glyphosate on agricultural and forestry workers since 2001, co-author Kate Guyton tells...

What Are GMO Foods, And Are They Okay To Eat?

The advent of genetically modified crops has promised heartier food and higher yields that could potentially reduce poverty and malnutrition rates the world over. Two decades later, they're also broadly maligned and mistrusted. But is it finally time to put down the pitchforks? A Brief History of GMOs Humanity's dominance over the natural world is inextricably bound to our ability to modify our surroundings to suit our needs and to exploit available resources to support our populations. And exploit we have! From the discovery of fire and the domestication of livestock to modern medicine and renewable energy generation, many of...
