Peer Inside a Mysterious Blue Hole in the Great Barrier Reef

Of all the names given to geological formations, "blue holes" have perhaps the most straightforward. For marine researchers, however, they're anything but. The watery sinkholes hold treasure troves of information. "Due to the sediment build-up over thousands of years, blue holes can be like time capsules for the ocean," said Australian marine biologist Johnny Gaskell. Gaskell recently explored one such blue hole in a remote location in the Great Barrier Reef. There, he shot video to capture what's nearly impossible to see from above. Lying below a small, nondescript rusty cap in Murmansk, Russia, is the deepest hole ever drilled, reaching a whopping 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) into the Earth’s crust. Known as the Kola Superdeep Borehole, the human-made hole seems like it should be leftover from a failed oil well, but it’s actually the result of over 20 years of Cold War fighting between the US and USSR who were locked in a technological arms race to see who could potentially drill into the centre of the Earth.
