Space war is coming — and the U.S. is not ready

War is coming to outer space, and the Pentagon warns it is not yet ready, following years of underinvesting while the military focused on a host of threats on Earth. Russia and China are years ahead of the United States in developing the means to destroy or disable satellites that the U.S. military depends on for everything from gathering intelligence to guiding precision bombs, missiles and drones. Now the Pentagon is trying to catch up — pouring billions more dollars into hardening its defenses against anti-satellite weapons, training troops to operate in the event their space lifeline is cut, and...

Google employees urge company to drop Pentagon A.I. work

Thousands of Google employees have signed on to a letter demanding that the company withdraw from its work on a Pentagon project that builds machine-learning technology that could be used for drone warfare. The New York Times on Wednesday published the text of the letter to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, which reportedly has more than 3,100 employee signatures, calling for a halt to its work on the effort, known as Project Maven. “We believe that Google should not be in the business of war,” the letter reads. “Therefore we ask that Project Maven be cancelled, and that Google draft, publicize...

The U.S....

Google Wants to Make Military Spy Drones Even Smarter

Google has partnered with the U.S. Department of Defense to help the agency develop smarter drone software. According to a report from Gizmodo, Google has agreed to provide the DOD with machine-learning software that will help the department's computers better detect objects in surveillance drone footage. The new partnership, which was leaked from an internal Google mailing list last week and confirmed yesterday (March 6) in a statement, is part of a DOD initiative called Project Maven (also known as the Algorithmic Warfare Cross-Function Team). According to a DOD news release issued last July, Project Maven aims to improve America's...
